Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a drugless non-invasive rational and evidence-based system of medicine imparting treatments with natural elements based on the Theory of vitality, theory of toxaemia, theory of self-healing capacity of the body and the principles of healthy living. Nature cure believes that the human body owes its existence to Nature’s five elements- Earth, Water, fire, Air and Ether- the composite representation of all forces of Nature. The treatment is also based on these five great elements which have immense healing properties. Hydrotherapy or water therapy is the use of water to relieve discomfort and promote physical well-being. The hip bath is one of the most useful forms of hydrotherapy. Hip bath, Sitz bath, Jacuzzi bath, Hot & cold compress, Steam bath, hot fomentation, Mud bath helps to relieve pain and detoxification of organs. Water is one of the five elements of nature having impact on the body during normal health as well as in sickness.

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our Nation who was also a firm believer in Naturopathy tried to improve it by adding ‘RAM NAM’ in the above definition.

Panchakarma

Panchakarma is a treatment program for the body, mind, and consciousness that cleanses and rejuvenates. It is based on Ayurvedic principles, every human is a unique phenomenon manifested through the five basic elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. The combination of these elements is three doshas (tridosha): Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and their balance is unique to each individual. When this doshic balance is disturbed, it creates disorder resulting in disease.

Panchakarma is done individually for each person with their specific constitution and specific disorder in mind, thus it requires close observation and supervision. Treatment starts with pre-purification Measures of Snehan and Svedana, and then cleansing methods – Shodanas are applied.

Nutritionist

A nutritionist examines dietary intake and lifestyle to discover imbalances.

Food is the primary source of nutrients to keep us nourished and healthy. Poor and unhealthy diets implicated with the increase of several non-communicable diseases (NCDs) require a food-based approach to reduce the ongoing rise. Traditional knowledge and science behind food-related health benefits became evident in the last three decades. Active ingredients, bioactive molecules and conventionally used herbs were clinically researched and proven to have beneficial outcomes. In the Indian scenario, the multiplicity of food products, including medicinal type formats, such as health supplements, containing plant, herbs or novel ingredients, brings in a new complexity to regulations. Several of these ingredients are pharmacologically active substances and could overlap with drug regulations. The data generated on the nutritional and health benefit of a supplement should be reproducible, outcomes measurable and disease risk reduction shown by well-designed research studies. Regulatory challenges occur at several levels, namely, harmonization of law, fair trade practice, population exposures to chemicals and contaminants, food borne illness, rise in NCD's, novel ingredients, new technologies and a legacy of regulatory practice. While regulatory and legal challenges will always exist, reliance on the role of scientific research in the regulatory context becomes significant.

Naturopathy History

Many of the principles and philosophies of naturopathy originated in Germany and Europe in the 16th and 17th century. The original naturopaths – prior to 1900s – from around the world, were trained by European doctors using hydrotherapy, herbal medicine and other traditional forms of healing. Currently, European countries consider their practice of naturopathy as a system of healthcare that has evolved by incorporating the traditional medicine of each country with the naturopathic principles, theories, modalities and traditions that have been codified in North America.

North America is considered the home of modern naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine. Most North American schools are government-accredited and all regions within North America are working toward regulation or licensure. There are strong national and regional naturopathic associations, ongoing naturopathic research and specialized groups and journals to support the practice of naturopathic medicine. North America is credited with codifying the naturopathic principles and for contributing some of the established theories and practices that are now used worldwide.

Throughout its history, naturopathy / naturopathic medicine is introduced into a country when a naturopath / naturopathic doctor that has been trained in North America or Europe moves and takes their skills with them. There is a synthesis of the European or North American training with the traditional systems of medicine in their country. For example, naturopathy was introduced to India after a medical doctor was trained by naturopaths in Europe; two of the respondents from South East Asia indicated that they were originally trained in the USA.

Sebastien Kneipp:   Sebastien Kneipp is widely known as the Father of Hydrotherapy due to his groundbreaking contributions and significant impact on the field. His pioneering work in developing a comprehensive system of hydrotherapy, known as the Kneipp Cure, revolutionized the use of water as a therapeutic modality and brought it into the mainstream. Kneipp's journey towards becoming the Father of Hydrotherapy began with his personal experience of healing from a severe case of tuberculosis using cold water treatments. Inspired by his own recovery, he dedicated himself to studying and researching the therapeutic properties of water. Through extensive experimentation and observation, Kneipp developed a holistic approach that incorporated various water applications, herbal remedies, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. (Kneipp, S. 1894).

Kuhne identified the digestive system as the seat of disease which would later become a core theory for the Naturopaths within the first decade of the profession’s inception. Kuhne introduced the concept of foreign matter as being responsible for the creation of disease. Foreign matter was anything that did not belong in the body. Over time, the accumulation of morbid or foreign matter that was not eliminated by the emunctories of the body lead to the formation of diseased tissues.  (Kuhne, L. 1901).
